In Section 4, youth will learn about the other skills and knowledge that are important for their career navigation now and in the future.

By the end of this section, youth participants will begin to:

  • Define what labour market information (LMI) is and what factors influence LMI; learn how to find LMI, and how to apply LMI to career navigation.
  • Justify what employers are looking for and how to use this knowledge in their career navigation.
  • Recognize the importance of soft skills to career navigation and future careers; learn how to develop and demonstrate these soft skills.
  • Examine what influences their career perceptions and choices.
  • Formulate effective decision making techniques.
  • Distinguish networking is and its importance to career navigation; learn how to identify, develop, and use a network.
  • State entrepreneurship is, what skills and knowledge are necessary for success as an entrepreneur, and how knowledge of entrepreneurship can help career navigation.

There is a lot of information in Section 4 that is imperative for effective career navigation, but this much information may be too  much to give some youth all at once.  For some youth, it may be more effective to break up this information, perhaps adding some on to other sessions.

Driverless trucks could mean ‘game over’ for thousands of jobs (The Globe and Mail, July 26, 2015).  This article describes how some jobs may be affected by driverless trucks.  This article would compliment the labour market information hypothetical example activity about self-driving cars and how they could affect the labour market.

How Labour Market Information Supports Career Development (Career Professionals of Canada, Sharon Graham, January 16, 2016).  This article explains the value of labour market information for career development and includes some links to some Canadian labour market information.
