Step Three of Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopen: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for July 2021
Ontario continues to make its way through the government’s Roadmap to Reopen and moved to Step Three on July 16. Step Three allows almost all businesses to operate with some capacity, typically limited to permit physical distancing of two meters, and public health measures in place. This includes essential and non-essential retail, indoor and outdoor dining (with no limits on the number of people per table and buffets open), personal care services (including services that require the removal of a face covering), indoor fitness classes and personal training (50% capacity), indoor cinemas (50% capacity), and casinos and bingo halls (50% capacity), among other lifted restrictions.
While there is no specific date announced for exiting the Roadmap to Reopen, the criteria states Ontario needs to remain in Step Three for at least 21 days and until certain vaccination thresholds are met, and could take place in mid-August (Ontario reveals details about restrictions when province exits Step 3, CTV).
July saw 5,779 total active job postings from 1,887 companies for an increase of 1.89% over the previous month’s 5,672 total active job postings. The Job Board received 15,991 interactions (a decrease of 6.18% from 16,980 interactions in June) from 4,937 users (a decrease of 7.4% from the previous month).
The top searched-for occupations overall in Windsor-Essex for July 2021 were:
Retail Salespersons; Administrative Assistants; Other Customer and Information Services Representatives; Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations; and Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers.
The top searched-for occupations by men in Windsor-Essex for July 2021 were:
Material Handlers; Retail Salespersons; Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers; Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations; and Other Customer Services and Information Services Representatives.
The top searched-for occupations by women in Windsor-Essex for July 2021 were:
Retail Salespersons; Administrative Assistants; Other Customer and Information Services Representatives; Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers; and Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations.
The top 10 in-demand occupations by local employers for July 2021 were:
Retail Salespersons; Cooks; Transport Truck Drivers; Material Handlers; Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations; Delivery and Courier Service Drivers; Retail and Wholesale Trade Managers; Home Support Workers, Housekeepers and Related Occupations; Other Customer and Information Services Representatives; and Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers.
Delivery and Courier Service Drivers saw a decline in search interest among men this month. The previous month saw Delivery and Courier Service Drivers as the third-most searched-for occupation by men with 109 interactions versus 55 interactions as the seventh-most searched-for occupation among men this month. However, the demand for Delivery and Courier Service Drivers is up slightly this month, from 117 job postings in June to 121 job postings in July. Although a small jump, the discrepancy could be due to the perceived notion that because the restrictions on indoor and outdoor dining as well as essential and non-essential retail were lifted and capacity increased as of July 16, that more people would dine and shop indoors instead of ordering delivery of food and goods. The demand shows that this may not be the case and that many shoppers and patrons are not as comfortable fully going back to pre-pandemic life quite yet.
June 2021 had the highest number of job postings for Retail Salespersons occupations with 324 postings, which increased yet again in July 2021 with a total of 390 Retail Salespersons jobs this month, up 20.37% over the previous month. This is also up 54.15% from 253 postings in February 2020. As essential and non-essential retail stores were able to accommodate more in-person shopping as of July 16, they would need to hire additional employees to prepare.
The top hiring sectors by two-digit NAICS also demonstrates the high demand for Retail Trade, up slightly from last month (909 postings in July, up 0.66% from 903 postings in June).
Job postings in the Information and Cultural Industries sector is up 36.36% from 55 postings last month to 75 in July. This sector would include Caesars Windsor, which was reopened with some restrictions on July 23 and continues to reopen various gaming and eating areas.
While Limited Service Eating Places did not see a significant change in number of job postings this month (114 in July, down from 117 in June), the number of job postings for Full-service Restaurants is up 25.32% from 154 postings in June to 193 in July, again due to the lifting of restrictions and increased capacity for indoor and outdoor dining. The novelty of Full-service Restaurants may be more appealing than Limited Service Eating Places as some people are eager for parts of their pre-pandemic lives to return.
