As of November 14, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health strongly recommends that Ontarians wear masks in all indoor public settings, including in schools and in childcare settings, but stopped short of recommending a return to a mask mandate in the province (CBC). This is higher than the pre-pandemic average of 5.8% in the month of November from 2017 to 2019.

Locally, hiring has increased for Administrative Officers (up 36.2% over the previous month), Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (up 30.6% over the previous month), and Delivery and Courier Service Drivers (up 20% over the previous month).

The demand for Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses is also up 54.1% from November 2021 (61 total active job postings) and up 88% from November 2020 (50 total active job postings). The Health Care and Social Assistance sector is hiring at a time when Ontario’s healthcare system is feeling the strain from an increase in respiratory viruses in patients.

While hiring for Delivery and Courier Service Drivers saw an increase over the previous month, it is down 32% from 97 total active job postings in November 2021 and down 4.4% from 69 total active job postings from November 2020. The increase over the previous month may be attributed to companies hiring additional staff to cover the busy holiday shopping season and an anticipated increase in online shopping for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Demand for Retail Salespersons is down, however it is still the number one in-demand occupation in Windsor-Essex. Although the total active job postings for Retail Salespersons are down 22.5% over the previous month, this is still up 9.8% from 409 total active job postings in November 2021 and up 129.1% from 196 total active job postings in November 2020. Hiring for the sector tends to peak in October as businesses prepare for the holiday shopping season, with November’s total active job postings slightly lower, so this is as expected.
