Transportation, Retail, and Accommodation: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for May 2023
This month saw large increases in interest for a variety of occupations, but did that match the in-demand occupations for Windsor-Essex for the month of May 2023? We drill down on the data to find out.

Searches for and interactions with job postings for Transport Truck Drivers in May increased most significantly overall, at 112.1% over the previous month. As seen in the table below, this was largely from men, who had a 277.3% increase in interactions with the occupation in May as compared to April.

Interactions among women increased most significantly for Other Medical Technologists and Technicians (Except Dental) (up 906.3% in May as compared to April), Accounting Technicians and Bookkeepers (up 313.8% in May as compared to April), and Human Resources Professionals (up 235.7% in May as compared to April).
Other Medical Technologists and Technicians (Except Dental Health) includes medical technologists and technicians not elsewhere classified, such as dietary technicians, pharmacy technicians, ocularists, prosthetists, orthotists, prosthetic technicians, and orthotic technicians. Dietary technicians are employed in health care and commercial food service establishments such as hospitals, extended care facilities, nursing homes, schools, cafeterias, and fast food outlets. Pharmacy technicians are employed in retail and hospital pharmacies, long-term care facilities, and by pharmaceutical manufacturers. Ocularists are employed in custom ocular prosthetic laboratories or they may be self-employed. Prosthetists, orthotists, and prosthetic and orthotic technicians are employed in hospitals, clinics, prosthetics and orthotics laboratories, and prosthetic device manufacturing companies. Prosthetists and orthotists may also be self-employed. Regional employers that hired Other Medical Technologists and Technicians (Except Dental Health) include Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaw Companies Limited, Walmart Canada, Valor Health, and Windsor Regional Hospital – Met Campus.

Interestingly, these three occupations do not typically appear on the top 15 lists, and, while these three occupations did not appear on the Top 20 In-Demand Occupations list below for May, there were a good number of total active job postings in the region for these occupations in May (Human Resources Professionals was #38 with 43 postings, Accounting Technicians and Bookkeepers was #40 with 42 postings, and Other Medical Technologists and Technicians [Except Dental] was #58 with 28 postings).

While total active job postings for Transport Truck Drivers has fallen 10.7% in May as compared to April, it is still the second-most in-demand occupation in the region for the month.
Other occupations that saw a significant increase in demand in May as compared to April include Administrative Officers (up 35.0%), Tool and Die Makers (up 33.3%), and Social and Community Service Workers (up 26.3%).

In looking at Hiring by 2-Digit NAICS, we can see how in-demand sectors are in Windsor-Essex.
The Retail Trade sector has continued its upward momentum since January with a 8.1% increase in total active job postings (from 700 in April to 757 in May).
Accommodation and Food Services also saw an increase in total active job postings, up 8.4% from 321 postings in April to 348 in May. This is likely due to employers preparing for warmer weather and a busier patio and tourism season.
Total active job postings did fall in the Transportation and Warehousing sector, down 4.7% from 253 postings in April to 241 in May, which was also noted specifically in the Top 20 In-Demand Occupations table with job postings for Transport Truck Drivers having decreased for the month.

In Retail Trade, total active job postings are up 20.0% for Supermarkets and Other Grocery (Except Convenience) Stores (from 95 postings in April to 114 in May); up 30.4% for Department Stores (from 56 postings in April to 73 in May); down 17.6% for Hardware Stores (from 74 postings in April to 61 in May); and up 76.5% for Appliance, Television and Other Electronics Stores (from 34 postings in April to 60 in May).
In Accommodation and Food Services, total active job postings are up 14.3% for Limited-Service Eating Places (from 119 postings in April to 136 in May) and down 4.9% for Full-Service Restaurants (from 122 postings in April to 116 in May).
In Transportation and Warehousing, total active job postings are up 3.5% for General Freight Trucking, Long Distance, Less Than Truck-Load (from 87 postings in April to 90 in May).
