Increases in Health and Recreation Occupations: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for January 2023

Windsor-Essex jobseekers and employers began the year strong with increased searches and job postings across the board. Keeping safe and healthy is a priority, and we will keep an eye on the absence rates due to illness or disability as reported in Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey.

January saw 6,095 total active job postings from 1,974 companies for an increase of 8.8% over the previous month’s 5,604 total active job postings. The Job Board and Job Map received 33,985 interactions from 6,982 users (a user increase of 34.4% over the previous month).

With the Job Board and Job Map seeing a significant increase in users and activity this month (an increase of 50.4% in interactions, from 22,531 interactions in December to 33,985 interactions in January), interest in all of the top 15 searched-for occupations overall in Windsor-Essex saw increases. The increase in activity on the job-finding tools may be due to individuals looking for more permanent employment options after the holidays.

The top 20 in-demand occupations by local employers for January 2023 were:

In the top 20 in-demand occupations for Windsor-Essex, all but two saw increases in demand in January over the previous month. Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations decreased 9.9% and Home Support Workers, Housekeepers and Related Occupations decreased 7.4% in January as compared to December.

The demand is in line with hiring in January, as employers would typically wait until after the holidays to post, interview, hire, and onboard new staff.

As compared to December, demand was up most significantly in January for Transport Truck Drivers (up 37.8%), Material Handlers (up 20.6%), and Other Customer and Information Services Representatives (up 19.0%).

New on the top 20 in-demand occupations for January was Program Leaders and Instructors in Recreation, Sport and Fitness, up 2.7% from the previous month. Program Leaders and Instructors in Recreation, Sport and Fitness lead and instruct groups and individuals in recreational, sports, fitness, or athletic programs. They are employed by community centres, sports and fitness clubs, outdoor centres, resorts, recreational facilities, health care facilities, retirement homes, correctional institutions, government departments, private businesses, tourism associations, and similar establishments. Some of the top regional employers of Program Leaders and Instructors in Recreation, Sport and Fitness in Windsor-Essex include GoodLife Fitness Centres Inc., Municipality of Leamington, Movati Athletic, Town of Tecumseh, and the Victorian Order of Nurses / VON Canada.

While job postings for Program Leaders and Instructors in Recreation, Sport and Fitness sees a slight uptick at the beginning of the year, likely due to an increase of patrons signing up to gyms for their New Years Resolutions, this is an increase of 33.9% from 56 total active job postings in January 2022 and an increase of 257.1% from 21 total active job postings in January 2021.

Hiring in the Health Care and Social Assistance sector increased 9.6% from 719 total active job postings in December to 788 in January, also making the sector the top hiring sector in the region for the month. Typically, the Retail Trade or the Administrative and Support, Waste Management and Remediation Services (which includes employment agencies) sectors hold the top spot with Health Care and Social Assistance as third or fourth.

Hiring in the Transportation and Warehousing sector increased 11.5% from 227 total active job postings in December to 253 in January, which we can see reflected in the increase in demand for Transport Truck Drivers and Material Handlers.

The Arts, Entertainment and Recreation sector saw a 28.9% increase from 52 total active job postings in December to 67 in January, in part helped by the increase in demand for Program Leaders and Instructors in Recreation, Sport and Fitness.

Looking at Hiring by 6-Digit NAICS, we can see the types of employers for the top sectors. In the Health Care and Social Assistance sector, employers hiring in January were General (Except Paediatric) Hospitals (up 17.3% from 133 total active job postings in December to 153 in January), Other Individual and Family Services (up 24.1% from 79 total active job postings in December to 98 in January), Nursing Care Facilities (down 8.7% from 103 total active job postings in December to 94 in January), Community Care Facilities for the Elderly (up 14.0% from 57 total active job postings in December to 65 in January), and Community Health Centres (up 6.4% from 47 total active job postings in December to 50 in January).

In Transportation and Warehousing, hiring was largely from General Freight Trucking, Long Distance, Less than Truck-Load, which increased 10.4% from 77 total active job postings in December to 85 in January.

Related to the above-mentioned demand for Program Leaders and Instructors in Recreation, Sport and Fitness, job postings from Fitness and Recreational Sport Centres increased 27.0% from 37 total active job postings in December to 47 total active job postings in January.
