Emily is from the WE area. She lived in Calgary and worked in the senior living industry for about 10 years. She started StrongerU Senior Fitness in September 2019 after seeing a need for programming for recreation & fitness professionals to deliver exceptional seniors fitness experiences. Her programs are for fitness professional working in retirement and long-term care homes. She saw a need for quality and consistent senior fitness programming and moved back to WE to start her company here.

Emily never planned to be an entrepreneur, but took a passion project she was working on in her spare time and turned it into a company. She said if you see a problem & can create a solution, and especially have a passion for it, go for it.

Emily works with WETech. They have been a great resource for her. Google was her mentor before, so WETech has been a game changer.

What does it mean to be an entrepreneur?

It means to make something new or improve on something – Fix a solution where somewhere is falling down. It is a lot of hard work. It is important to “Don’t let the highs get too high or the lows get too low”

Why is entrepreneurship a beneficial career in W-E?

There is a lot of support here. The personalized help and support has been incredible.

Do you have any advice for future female entrepreneurs?

I’m sure you’ve heard this statistic: “Men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them.”. This means women are less likely to try something new and entrepreneurship is as new and uncertain as you can get. Women drive 70-80% of all consumer purchasing decisions. If you have a solution to a problem, chances are there is a woman out there who is waiting for you to create it and will buy it when you do. Believe in your idea, believe in yourself, and give it a go. I started StrongerU Senior Fitness as a passion project, side-gig, while still working my full-time job for over a year. I knew nothing about running a business, but found that their were resources and organizations willing to help me fill in the blanks.
