Bilingual Job Search and Demand for October 2019

Knowing a second language can widen job opportunities and grow your network. In the Windsor-Essex region, there are many different sectors looking for individuals to fill positions requiring language skills other than English.

In October 2019, 170 jobs postings were identified as bilingual. This includes jobs requiring Arabic, French, German, Punjabi, Italian, or Spanish language skills. Of those 170 job postings, 140 were identified as full time jobs, 27 were part-time jobs, and three did not specify whether they were full time or part-time.

The 170 job postings were in a variety of sectors, and included job positions such as Accounting Clerk, Administrative Assistant, Bilingual Customer Service Representative, Business Development Manager, Caseworker, Community Connections Project Coordinator, Early Childhood Educator, Family Physician, Greenhouse Supervisor, Health Care Technician, Market Intelligence Analyst, Neurologist, Sales Account Manager, Social Worker, Therapy Assistant, and Youth Worker Custody/Detention, among others. Interesting to note, one of the positions in October was for a French AV Technician apprentice. Another position was an Information Technology Security Specialist for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority that was identified as a French-language job.

Bilingual job postings were down 18% from the previous month, however. In September 2019, there were 208 job postings identified as bilingual.

Of the 856 keyword searches on the Jobs Board for the month of October, there were seven instances of searching specifically for a bilingual or language-specific job. This included the terms bilingual, bilingual jobs, Chinese, French, and Mandarin. Of the seven instances, three were male, three female, and one instance declined to answer gender.
