This week, the in-demand job is: Receiving Supervisor.
Receivers and Shippers, ship, receive, and record the movement of parts, supplies, materials, equipment, and stock to and from an establishment. They oversee loading and unloading of goods from trucks or other conveyances and inspect and verify incoming goods against invoices or other documents, record shortages, and reject damaged goods. Shippers and Receivers also unpack, code, and route goods to appropriate storage areas and maintain internal, manual, or computerized record-keeping systems.
We spoke with Anjali, who started her job as a receiver only a year ago, and was recently promoted to a Receiving Supervisor at Mucci Farms!
What does an average day look like for you?
Receivers at Mucci count the produce and the dry goods coming in, and receive them according to the bill. If the bill says different than what is counted, we record the discrepancies. My role is to perform this task and supervise the recievers who do it as well.
What do you enjoy about your job?
It’s a friendly atmosphere here at Mucci farms. All of the employees, all of my coworkers are like family to me. In my office, everyone communicates and is willing to help each other.
When I first started here, I didn’t know anything at all about produce, or anything about this industry, but everyone was so kind and helpful so I was able to learn the job quickly.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Some days can be extremely busy that it’s hard to keep up, but that is part of the fun. Everything gets done because we work well together and that makes us all happy!
What job training was needed to become a Receiver?
Basic training was computer knowledge and an ability to multitask. Our team gave me the best training that I could have asked for, and I got a resourceful receiver or supervisor to shadow for 3 weeks. They showed me everything step by step. We started with the small things like receiving transfers from other facilities of Mucci Farms, then receiving from local vendors, and then the cross border products. The best thing about Mucci Farms is the support. If we make mistakes, teammates and supervisors stay with us until we learn how to do something correctly, which makes us feel better and work better.
What advice do you have for someone looking to get in to this industry?
At this job we meet people from around the world, from all different cultures. Basically, Mucci Farms is a multicultural world. Anyone who is hardworking and wants to start a career here, especially students, can get a job a build a career here. It is important to study how to communicate with coworkers and 3rd party personnel. My advice is that if you work really hard and prepare your mind to make the work environment a place you want to be, you will earn everything you want, just like me. I’m a happy soul whose dreams came true because I’m an Indian girl from a middle class family, and Windsor and Mucci Farms built me up and made me a better person.
What skills do you have that make you a great Receiver?
- Confidence- I’m confident at my job because I feel comfortable and knowledgeable about the work.
- Focused and Detail Oriented- I have to deal with lots of numbers, so being detailed is a really helpful skill to have.
- Friendly – I get along great with my coworkers, which makes it easy to work together.
- Organized—With a busy job it’s important to stay organized, and we do that by following all the procedures on how to receive everything. Being organized makes life easier!
What are you future career goals?
When I started here my goal was to stay in Canada, so my focus was to get my paperwork as I’m an immigrant from India. I worked very hard to get my category level job, so I accomplished my goal as a Mucci Farms employee, and I’m very thankful.
Why did you choose to live and work in Windsor-Essex?
I choose to work and live in Windsor Essex because for me, this is the quite place to start a fresh life for people like me who love a peaceful place. Here, we have great opportunities and the best resources to help me grow. Reasonable price for a home, groceries and social life. I came to Windsor December of 2016, and this place was strange for me. When I first arrived I did dish-washing, worked at Tim Horton’s, and was a delivery driver. Now, two and a half years after, I’m a receiving supervisor. I would say Windsor built me up, I have never felt unsafe and I enjoy the surrounding communities like Amherstburg, Kingsville and LaSalle, which are my favorite places to hang out with friends.
