On January 23, 2025, the Windsor Essex Local Immigration Partnership (WE LIP) and the University of Windsor School of Social Work hosted the Newcomer Youth Resilience Project Sharing Session. During the session, valuable insights were shared into the challenges and successes that newcomer youth face as they navigate their new environment. The research highlighted the barriers they encounter in areas such as education, social integration, and cultural adaptation, while also showcasing the strategies and strengths that help them overcome these obstacles. This in-person event provided an important platform for discussing the findings of a comprehensive research project focused on the resilience of newcomer youth in our community. The event brought together researchers, service providers, and community leaders to share insights and best practices.

Here is an Overview of the Event:

  • The session opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. Jayashree Mohanty, followed by a land acknowledgement and introductory remarks from Dr. Cheryl Collier and Dr. Wayne Ambrose Miller of the University of Windsor.
  • The research presentation provided an in-depth look into the experiences of newcomer youth and the factors contributing to their resilience and mental well-being.

  • Following the presentation, a service provider panel discussion featured experts who shared their experiences and best practices in supporting newcomer youth. Panelists included:
    • Laure Khalil from YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, & Dr. Riham Al-Saadi from the School of Social Work
    • Nada Ahmed, the Centre communautaire francophone Windsor-Essex-Kent (CCFWEK)

Research Findings: Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the specific challenges and triumphs of newcomer youth, as well as the ways in which they demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity.
Community Dialogue: The session fostered an open and collaborative dialogue among community members, educators, researchers, and social work professionals about the best approaches to support newcomer youth.
Future Initiatives: Discussions centered around how local organizations can continue to create inclusive programs and services that empower newcomer youth and ensure their successful integration into society.
