The second Motivational Interviewing training session allowed for some reflection on previous learnings, and how staff were able to integrate previous training into their professional – and even personal – lives.

Quick fact: Miller and Rollnick, the MI architects, developed four guiding principles, represented by the acronym RULE:

  • Resist the righting reflex
  • Understand the client’s own motivations
  • Listen with empathy
  • Empower the client

Motivational interviewing is grounded in curiosity, with an emphasis on empowerment through empathy. Focusing on the client and their motivations, while resisting the urge to impose your own lived experience of best advice can be challenging, so the team was fortunate to participate in some one-on-one examples after watching demonstrations from Don and his team.
