Transportation & Warehousing & Part vs. Full Time Work: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for September 2024

September 2024 presents a paradoxical trend: while the number of job postings has seen a decline in Windsor-Essex, the activity on the Job Board experienced an increase. This suggests that although fewer positions are being advertised, there’s a growing pool of active jobseekers. We may have seen a decrease in job postings due to a seasonal transition, where the busier summer months have concluded and businesses may naturally reduce their hiring needs until the holiday season. Understanding these trends is crucial for both jobseekers and employers aiming to navigate the region’s employment environment.

In September 2024, there were 4,770 total active job postings from 1,820 companies for a decrease of 17% in total active job postings from the previous month. The number of new job postings also decreased this month, down 8% from August, with 2,384 new jobs posted in the month of September. The Job Board received 22,621 job post clicks, up 4% from the previous month.

As job postings were down across the board during the month of September, the only occupation that saw an increase in total active job postings in September as compared to August in the above list was Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers (up 14.4%). Also noteworthy: Retail and Wholesale Trade Managers remained unchanged from the previous month.

Most occupations in the above list saw a decrease in total active job postings in September as compared to August, most drastically: Mechanical Engineers (down 53.3%), Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers (down 46.6%), Electrical and Electronics Engineers (down 41.3%), Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics (down 26.7%), and Other Customer and Information Services Representatives (down 26.2%).

In recent months, this series has covered the increase in demand for Electronics Engineers, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers, and Mechanical Engineers. These three occupations share similar regional employers, such as NextStar Energy, RACAR Canada Inc., and Onward Technologies Canada Inc. The fact that these three occupations are still on the top 20 in-demand list means that these types of engineers are still very much in demand in the region, but that the hiring has slowed down some in the industry. This is still a very viable career path.

One occupation that is new to the list this month is Automotive Service Technicians, Truck and Bus Mechanics and Mechanical Repairers, which inspect, diagnose, repair, and service mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems and components of cars, buses, and light and commercial transport trucks. They are employed by motor vehicle dealers, garages, truck and trailer dealerships, fleet maintenance companies, service stations, automotive specialty shops, transportation companies, and retail establishments which have automotive service shops. This also includes mechanical repairers who perform major repairs and replacement of mechanical units on newly assembled motor vehicles. They are employed by motor vehicle manufacturing companies.

Regional employers of Automotive Service Technicians, Truck and Bus Mechanics and Mechanical Repairers include Huron Automotive Services, AutoCanada, First Student, NAPA Auto Parts, and Mihorens Automotive Service.

As noted, the list of the top 20 in-demand occupations for Windsor-Essex all saw a decrease in postings this month, save for Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers and Retail and Wholesale Trade Managers, but in looking at the most searched-for and most in-demand jobs for the region in September, these two occupations saw increases both in searches and in demand.

Hiring by 2-Digit NAICS:

As was the case last month, where we also saw a decrease in job postings over the previous month, most sectors in the region saw a decrease in job postings in September. While Utilities and Mining, Quarrying, and Oil and Gas Extraction both saw increases, it is off of a smaller base. The Arts, Entertainment and Recreation sector saw an increase again this month, up 7.4% from August, which was 28.9% up from July.

Transportation and Warehousing also saw an increase of job postings (up 3.5%). The Transportation and Warehousing sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in transporting passengers and goods, warehousing and storing goods, and providing services to these establishments. The modes of transportation are road (trucking, transit, and ground passenger), rail, water, air, and pipeline. These are further subdivided according to the way in which businesses in each mode organize their establishments. National post office and courier establishments, which also transport goods, are included in this sector. Warehousing and storage establishments are subdivided according to the type of service and facility that is operated. Many of the establishments in this sector are structured as networks, with activities, workers, and physical facilities distributed over an extensive geographic area. Regional employers in this sector include AAR Aircraft Services Windsor ULC, ADM Agri-Industries Company, Hearn Industrial Services, Russell A. Farrow Limited, and CN Railway.

Some postings for one of the top in-demand occupations this month (Automotive Service Technicians, Truck and Bus Mechanics and Mechanical Repairers) would also fall into this sector. Additionally, the Transportation and Warehousing sector could have seen a bump due to Windsor’s Amazon delivery station, slated to open by the end of October with 70 employees (CBC).

Part Time and Full Time Positions

In looking at the type of work jobseekers are looking for on the Job Board, those searching by type of job are largely looking for part time work (560 interactions vs. 361 interactions for full time).

In addition to this, diving deeper into keyword searches, there were 124 search instances for some sort of part time work on the Job Board versus nine search instances of full time.

On the other hand, employers are posting largely full time positions, with 3,924 of the 4,770 total active job postings (or 82.3%) being for full time jobs.

Top Hiring Employers:

Looking at the companies posting jobs in Windsor-Essex, the below table shows the top 10 hiring companies in the region.

While most sectors saw a decrease in postings, we can see strong hiring from specific companies on the above list that indicate these sectors are still going strong locally. For instance, although total active job postings in the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector were down 15.6% in September as compared to August, Windsor Regional Hospital remains the top hiring employer in the region. Additionally, while total active job postings in the Retail Trade sector were down 11.3% in September as compared to August, Walmart, Loblaws, and Shoppers Drug Mart are all hiring in the region. We also see that Onward Technologies Canada Inc., RACAR Canada Inc., and NextStar Energy all appear in this top 10 list of hiring companies, so even though demand for Electronics Engineers, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers, and Mechanical Engineers has declined, this demonstrates that they are all still very much in-demand.
