Health & Education: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for October 2024

This month, the Windsor-Essex region saw a couple notable shifts in the local labour market. Hiring in the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector stands out, reflecting a broader trend driven by an aging population and a growing need for care services, as does the increase in hiring for Early Childhood Educators and Assistants. This suggests a response to not only demographic changes, but evolving societal priorities, emphasizing the critical roles these professions play in supporting community well-being and economic growth.

In October 2024, there were 4,560 total active job postings from 1,718 companies for a decrease of 4% in total active job postings from the previous month. The number of new job postings also decreased this month, down 7% from September, with 2,206 new jobs posted in the month of October. The Job Board received 25,117 job post clicks, up 12% from the previous month.

Occupations that saw a significant increase in interactions on the Job Board in October as compared to September include Other Labourers in Processing, Manufacturing and Utilities (up 130.3%); Delivery Service Drivers and Door-to-Door Distributors (up 102.9%); Early Childhood Educators and Assistants (up 94.4%); Medical Administrative Assistants (up 48.9%); and Cashiers (up 40.6%).

Occupations that saw a significant decrease in interactions on the Job Board in October as compared to September include Retail Salespersons and Visual Merchandisers (down 11.3%); Construction Trades Helpers and Labourers (down 10.6%); Material Handlers (down 10.3%); Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations (down 5.5%); and Administrative Assistants (down 2.5%).

Occupations that saw an increase in total active job postings in October as compared to September include Early Childhood Educators and Assistants (up 33.3%), Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics (up 9.1%), Retail and Wholesale Trade Managers (up 7.7%), Food Service Supervisors (up 7.5%), and Mechanical Engineers (up 2.0%).

Occupations that saw a decrease in total active job postings in October as compared to September include Electrical and Electronics Engineers (down 18.9%); Administrative Assistants (down 17.5%); Retail Salespersons and Visual Merchandisers (down 17.2%); Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (down 14.7%); and Automotive Service Technicians, Truck and Bus Mechanics and Mechanical Repairers (down 14.6%).

In comparing the most searched-for and most in-demand jobs lists for the region in October, there is one occupation that saw both a significant increase in searches and in job postings: Early Childhood Educators and Assistants.

Early Childhood Educators plan, organize, and implement programs for children between the ages of infancy and 12 years. Early Childhood Educator Assistants provide care for infants and preschool- to school-age children under the guidance of Early Childhood Educators. Early Childhood Educators and Assistants lead children in activities to stimulate and develop their intellectual, physical, and emotional growth and ensure their security and well-being. They are employed in child-care centres, daycare centres, kindergartens, agencies for exceptional children, and other settings where early childhood education services are provided. Supervisors of Early Childhood Educators and Assistants are also included.

Most sectors saw a decline in job postings during the month of October, where job postings were down 4% across the region. Some sectors did see growth, however, including Healthcare and Social Assistance (up 0.4%) which took on the top spot in terms of the sector with the highest number of job postings this month, despite job postings for Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses being down 14.7% and Home Support Workers, Caregivers and Related Occupations down 1.1%. Also, despite the increase in job postings for Early Childhood Educators and Assistants, job postings in the Educational Services sector was down 17.8%.

Top Growing and Top Declining Occupations

While seeing certain occupations decline in total active job posts for the month can be discouraging, it should be noted that jobs that appear on these lists are still very much in demand. By looking at the top growing occupations over the past year, we can better see the trends of which occupations are seeing significant growth throughout the year.

Above, we see that despite some of these occupations seeing a decline in total active job postings in October the above occupations still provide great career opportunities.

On the other hand, despite appearing on the in-demand occupations list, there are some occupations that are seeing a decline in demand. This doesn’t mean that there are not any opportunities in these occupations, as there are still many job postings for these occupations listed on the Job Board.

Looking at the companies posting jobs in Windsor-Essex, the below table shows the top 10 hiring companies in the region.

Looking at the above list of top hiring employers for the region, it is no surprise that an employer in the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector (Windsor Regional Hospital) is at the top of the list for October. We also see other employers from the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector, such as AgeCare Royal Oak Long Term Care Residence and RhynoCare listed. And while the Retail Trade sector did see a decrease, we still see a number of employers from this sector on the top hiring employers list, such as Walmart Canada, Loblaws, and Shoppers Drug Mart. Also of note is that NextStar Energy is the second-most top hiring employer in the region for October, which is very encouraging news.
