Construction and Educational Services: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for July 2024

Windsor-Essex saw a slight increase in total active job postings for July 2024. The increases were seen in a variety of sectors, but this month we’re concentrating on Construction and Educational Services by looking at the trends in these sectors, as well as analyzing the roles employers are actively seeking to fill and the types of positions jobseekers are most interested in.

In July 2024, there were 6,427 total active job postings from 2,167 companies for an increase of 2% in total active job postings from the previous month. The number of new job postings also increased this month, up 25% from June, with 3,485 new jobs posted in the month of July. The Job Board received 23,848 job post clicks, up 2% from the previous month.

Occupations that saw a significant increase in interactions on the Job Board in July as compared to June include Construction Trades Helpers and Labourers (up 63.8%), Delivery and Courier Service Drivers (up 44.6%), Transport Truck Drivers (up 32.9%), Accounting Technicians and Bookkeepers (up 31.7%), and Material Handlers (up 29.2%).

Occupations that saw a significant decrease in interactions on the Job Board in July as compared to June include Administrative Officers (down 36.2%); Janitors, Caretakers and Building Superintendents (down 19.8%); Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers (down 16.3%); Home Support Workers, Caretakers and Related Occupations (down 15.9%); and Medical Administrative Assistants (down 12.9%).

Occupations that saw an increase in total active job postings in July as compared to June include Electrical and Electronics Engineers (up 26.7%), Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers (up 22.2%), Security Guards and Related Security Service Occupations (up 18.2%), Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics (up 16.7%), and Food Service Supervisors (up 16.1%).

Occupations that saw a decrease in total active job postings in July as compared to June include Administrative Officers (down 20.6%), Insurance Agents and Brokers (down 16.5%), Administrative Assistants (down 10.8%), Retail and Wholesale Trade Managers (down 8.5%), and Medical Administrative Assistants (down 7.3%).

Looking at the most searched-for and most in-demand jobs for the region in July, the occupations seeing both increases in searches and in demand include Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations; Other Customer and Information Services Representatives; and Material Handlers.

We also saw that Construction Trades Helpers and Labourers saw an increase in searches, but Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics saw an increase in demand. What is the difference between these two construction-related occupations?

Construction Trades Helpers and Labourers assist skilled tradespersons and perform labouring activities at construction sites, in quarries, and in surface mines. They are employed by construction companies, trade and labour contractors, and surface mine and quarry operators. Regional employers of Construction Trades Helpers and Labourers include BELFOR Canada, Gervais Contracting Inc., Daya Drywall Ltd., Home Improvement Experts, and Supreme Basement Solutions.

Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics install, maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. This unit group includes industrial textile machinery mechanics and repairers. Construction millwrights are employed by millwrighting contractors. Industrial mechanics are employed in manufacturing plants, utilities, and other industrial establishments. Regional employers of Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics include Flex N Gate Windsor, Highline Mushrooms, NextStar Energy, The Electromac Group, and Archer Daniels Midland Company.

Top Growing Sectors

In addition to looking at the most in-demand occupations and sectors month over month, we can also examine what sectors have risen most over the past year.

From the above table, we can see the continued rise in demand for the recovering Information and Cultural Industries sector, but also the Educational Services sector. Hiring by 2-Digit NAICS:

While total active job postings in the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector did decrease 2.4% in July over June, it is still the top hiring sector in the region, a trend we’ve seen throughout 2024.

The 40.7% increase in total active job postings for Educational Services in July as compared to June could be attributed to school boards hiring for the upcoming school year (which we’ll see more about below).

Although there seems to be interest in the Construction sector, as seen in the most searched-for and in-demand lists, the sector did see a 6.3% decrease in total active job postings in July as compared to June.

Top Hiring Employers:

Looking at the companies posting jobs in Windsor-Essex, the below table shows the top 10 hiring companies in the region.

As noted above, the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector is the top hiring sector in Windsor-Essex, so seeing Windsor Regional Hospital as the top hiring employer in the region is no surprise. We also see the increase in Retail Trade through Loblaws and Walmart. The continued increase in engineering occupations (specifically Electrical and Electronics, Industrial and Manufacturing, and Mechanical Engineers) is largely from Onward Technologies Canada Inc. and RACAR Canada Inc. (among others).

In the second spot of hiring employers in Windsor-Essex for July is the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, which would also be in part why the Educational Services sector saw a 40.7% increase in total active job postings in July as compared to June, with school boards hiring for the upcoming school year beginning in September.
