WE LIP Success Story | October 2024
On Thursday, October 10th 2024, the Windsor Essex Local Immigration Partnership (WE LIP), in collaboration with the New Canadian’s Centre of Excellence Inc. (NCCE), hosted the “Newcomers Exploring In-Demand Jobs” conference, also known as Job Day. Held at the Caboto Club, this event provided a crucial opportunity for newcomers ready to access employment services, including Permanent Residents, Convention Refugees, Canadian Citizens who have been in Canada for five years or less, and asylum seekers with open work permits.
The event had 726 jobseekers and featured a comprehensive program designed to connect newcomers with meaningful employment opportunities. There were 17 employers present with additional employers having their postings in the express lane. Also, various settlement service providers supported the planning of this event, and participated day-of. The day offered attendees multiple ways to interact, learn, and grow professionally.
Here are the Highlights of the Event:
- Employer Engagement: Attendees had the chance to visit employer exhibitor booths, drop off resumes in an “express lane” to be shared directly with hiring employers, and even schedule on-the-spot interviews.
- Career Coaching: Participants received personalized support through coaching sessions that covered essential job-seeking skills such as resume writing, effective interviewing techniques, and more.
- In-Demand Career Presentations: Experts provided insights into in-demand careers, including sectors such as Early Childhood Education, Skilled Trades, Engineering, and Healthcare, equipping newcomers with valuable knowledge for their professional journeys.
- Virtual Reality Simulations: Attendees experienced in immersive virtual reality simulations through advanced technology.
- Printing/Resource Area: Attendees were able to print copies of their resume and cover letters without any cost.
- Settlement Support: Service providers were on-site to inform attendees about programs and service to aid their transition and career development.
Job Day was a tremendous success, marked by active participation and a palpable sense of optimism and opportunity. This collaborative effort underscored the commitment of WE LIP, NCCE, employers, and service providers to support the economic integration of newcomers in Windsor-Essex. By providing access to employment resources and facilitating direct connections with hiring employers, the event laid a strong foundation for the professional growth and integration of newcomers into the local workforce.
