Self Employment Services in Leamington receives WFWE award

As part of their 75th anniversary celebrations, the Leamington Chamber of Commerce held another successful Business Excellence Awards to recognize outstanding local businesses.

Nominations were invited from their 300 member firms and ultimately awarded to nine individuals from companies focused on excellence in quality, service, innovation or for overall excellence in their organization.

Workforce WindsorEssex's "Invested in a World-Class Workforce" award was won by Christine Thompson, program coordinator, Self Employment Services for her success in delivering the Self Employment Benefit Program to unemployed people who are looking to start their own business.

The WFWE award recognizes a business, organization or association that invests in skills development and training; providing career development opportunities, modeling life-long learning and showing exceptional commitment to equity and diversity in the local workforce.

The chamber's general manager, Sally MacDonald said the Self Employment Service program has been in place for over 15 years and for the last 10 years has helped "250 participants come off unemployment benefits and start their own businesses."

Thompson was honoured by the nomination and said she couldn't have been successful without all the volunteers, workshop leaders and supporters involved. Part of the program's success is due to the dedication of past participants who have organized an alumni group to assist Thompson in mentoring new inductees.

During her speech, Thompson reflected on the impact of her work. "It's rewarding to watch a business grow from an idea to reality."

"My real sense of achievement comes from watching people achieve their goals, knowing I had a hand in that," said Thompson.
